At the conclusion of the recent Jobs and Skills Summit, the Australian Government vowed to strengthen the Migration System by taking the following immediate actions:
- Increase the Permanent Migration Program planning level to 195,000 for the financial year 2022-2023 to help address the critical skills shortages
- Provide an additional funding of $36.1 million to accelerate visa processing and resolve the issue of visa backlogs
- Increase Post Study work rights duration by two years for recent graduates of select degrees (still to be determined)
- Extend relaxed work restrictions for student and training visa holders until 30 June 2023 to ease skills and labour shortages
The Government will also continue working on the following:
- Assess the effectiveness of the skilled migration occupations lists
- Expand pathways to permanent residency for temporary skilled sponsored workers
- Increase the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT)
- Examine the potential for industry sponsorship of skilled migrants
