General Skilled Migration

SKILLED INDEPENDENT (189) VISA

This is a permanent visa for skilled workers without need for a sponsor or nominator.  Application for this visa is points-tested.  The worker can bring family members to live, work and study in Australia.  They can apply for Medicare and may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship after residing in Australia for 4 years.

General Requirements:

  • Less than 45 years of age (at the time of Invitation to apply for a visa)
  • Occupation included on the Medium or Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
  • Skills assessment from assessing authority
  • At least 65 points
  • Expression of Interest (EOI) – Invited to apply for a visa
  • English language ability – at least competent English
  • Meet the health requirement
  • Meet the character requirement

 AIM assists in applying for a Skills Assessment and in preparing an EOI and visa application.

NEW ZEALAND (189 NZ) STREAM

This is a permanent visa for New Zealand citizens who have demonstrated commitment and contribution to Australia. The NZ citizen can bring family members to live, work and study in Australia. They may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship after residing in Australia for at least 4 years.

General Requirements:

  • Must hold New Zealand Special Category (subclass 444) visa
  • Usually resided in Australia for a continuous period of at least 5 years immediately before the date of application
  • Continuous period of usual residence started on or before February 2016
  • Taxable Income at TSMIT (AUD53,900) for at least 3 of the last 5 years (including the most recent financial year) unless exempt*
  • Meet the health requirement
  • Meet the character requirement

        * For applications on or after 1 July 2021

 AIM assists in preparing and lodging the visa application.

SKILLED NOMINATED (190) VISA

This is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government.  Application for this visa is points-tested. The worker can bring family members to live, work and study in Australia. They can apply for Medicare and may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship after residing in Australia for 4 years.

General Requirements:

  • Less than 45 years of age (at the time of Invitation to apply for a visa)
  • Occupation included on the relevant skilled list
  • Skills assessment from assessing authority
  • At least 65 points
  • Expression of Interest (EOI)
  • Nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency
  • English language ability – at least competent English
  • Meet the health requirement
  • Meet the character requirement

SKILLED WORK REGIONAL (491) VISA

This is a 5-year temporary visa for skilled workers nominated by an Australian state or territory government. The worker can bring family members to live, work and study in a designated regional area of Australia.  After 3 years on 491 visa, they can apply for a permanent resident (subclass 191) visa.

General Requirements:

  • Less than 45 years of age
  • Occupation included on the relevant skilled occupations list
  • Skills assessment from assessing authority
  • At least 65 points
  • Expression of Interest
  • Nominated to apply by a State or Territory government agency, or sponsored by an eligible relative
  • English language ability – at least competent English
  • Meet the health requirement
  • Meet the character requirement
