Changes to the Australian Migration System

At the conclusion of the recent Jobs and Skills Summit, the Australian Government vowed to strengthen the Migration System by taking the following immediate actions:

  • Increase the Permanent Migration Program planning level to 195,000 for the financial year 2022-2023 to help address the critical skills shortages
  • Provide an additional funding of $36.1 million to accelerate visa processing and resolve the issue of visa backlogs
  • Increase Post Study work rights duration by two years for recent graduates of select degrees (still to be determined)
  • Extend relaxed work restrictions for student and training visa holders until 30 June 2023 to ease skills and labour shortages

The Government will also continue working on the following:

  • Assess the effectiveness of the skilled migration occupations lists
  • Expand pathways to permanent residency for temporary skilled sponsored workers
  • Increase the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT)
  • Examine the potential for industry sponsorship of skilled migrants
