The Department of Home Affairs has identified 44 occupations which are currently in demand in Australia. The Priority Migration Occupations List (PMSOL) which was originally released in September 2020 has been updated to fill Australia’s critical need for skilled workers and to support the country’s economic recovery from Covid-19.
The 44 priority occupations are:

Priority processing will be given to employer sponsored nominations and visa applications with occupations in the PMSOL. These include applications for the visa subclasses:
- Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482)
- Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494)
- Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa (subclass 186)
Priority may likewise be given to applications for these visa subclasses:
- Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
- Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
Overseas applicants who are granted temporary work visas may enter Australia even while the border restrictions remain in place but must obtain a travel exemption before coming to Australia. Those who are granted permanent resident visas can enter Australia without getting a travel exemption.
