Australia Reopens to International Students and Eligible Visa Holders on December 15

Australia will continue to reopen its borders to eligible visa holders including international students, skilled workers and prospective marriage visa holders on December 15, 2021.  This was confirmed by Health Minister Greg Hunt in a Press Conference held in Melbourne earlier today.

When asked by reporters if the government would reopen the international borders on December 15, Minister Hunt replied, “Yes, we are on track for that… (T)he reopening is scheduled, will be going ahead and has been reaffirmed over the weekend in consultation with the Prime Minister, the National Cabinet discussion, and the advice from the Chief Medical Officer.”

It will be remembered that the federal government postponed the reopening of borders for international students and skilled migrants from the 1st to the 15th of December in response to concerns over the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron.  The announcement caused frustration to numerous visa holders who had been locked out of Australia due to border restrictions for almost two years.

With the scheduled reopening of borders, these eligible visa holders will no longer be required to secure an exemption to travel into Australia.
